Buying guide

A chain has to match the speed of your cassette and shifters. An 11-speed chain is narrower than a 10-speed, and a 12-speed narrower still, so a mismatched chain shifts poorly and wears faster. Road, gravel and mountain bike chains of the same speed are usually interchangeable, though some brands quote their own compatibility.

Compare chains by speed, brand and price, and check the fit against your groupset before buying. Most chains ship at a standard length and are shortened to your bike, so also check the link count if you run a large cassette or a long-cage derailleur.
