Italian Threaded Bottom Bracket Compatibility

Also known as: ITA, 36 x 24, Italian thread

Italian is a threaded standard found mainly on classic and higher-end Italian road frames. The shell is 36mm × 24 TPI and 70mm wide — larger in diameter and wider than BSA, and NOT interchangeable with it.

Unlike BSA, both Italian cups thread in the same direction (both cups are right-hand threaded), which can make the drive-side cup more prone to loosening. It is otherwise a fully serviceable threaded interface with BB options for most crank spindles.

Good to know: Italian is 36 × 24 and 70mm wide — a BSA (1.37" × 24, 68/73mm) bottom bracket will NOT fit an Italian frame, or vice-versa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Italian bottom bracket threaded or press-fit?

Italian is a threaded standard: the cups screw directly into the frame (36mm shell, 36mm × 24 TPI thread). Threaded shells are generally the most creak-free and serviceable, because no bearing is pressed into the frame itself.

What shell width does a Italian frame use?

Italian frames use a 70mm shell (36mm shell, 36mm × 24 TPI thread). Always match your bottom bracket to both the standard and your frame's exact shell width before buying.

Which cranks fit a Italian frame?

With the right bottom bracket, a Italian frame can run cranks on several spindle standards. In our catalogue we have Italian bottom brackets for: 24mm (Shimano Hollowtech II); Campagnolo Ultra-Torque (25mm); SRAM DUB (28.99mm); 30mm (BB30 / PF30 / 386EVO); Campagnolo Power-Torque (25mm); Square taper (ISO); Square taper (JIS); SRAM GXP (24/22mm). Pick the bottom bracket that matches your crank's spindle — most commonly 24mm (Shimano Hollowtech II).
